A Full Term Online: a Valid Option to Start the IMBRSea Joint International Programme
The most unexpected discoveries are often made closest to home. With this in mind, you can read here how fellow Ghent University lecturers shape their own teaching practice. Who knows, maybe this story will inspire you too?
Context
Description
Every year, over 100 international students from across the world start the joint international master IMBRSea, organised by 11 European universities and coordinated by UGent. Mobility is key during this 2-year programme. Students study on campus in at least 2 different universities from the consortium. During the programme they choose 1 of 5 specialist tracks.
Due to the travel restriction prompted by the covid-19-pandemic, course holders of different universities decided to work together to create a full online first semester for the IMBRSea students. In the first edition (2020-2021) 40 international students took part in the full online semester and the second edition (2021-2022) counted 24 international participants. Also for the years to come, enrolled students will be able to choose this full online offer as a valid alternative to the on campus first semester.
The online offer includes interuniversity courses of general topics that take into account the diverse backgound knowledge of the incoming students. This way, students get the opportunity to gain the basic competences needed to start their specialist track from the second semester onwards.
More information can be found in the videos below and on the IMBRSea website.
Related educational innovation projects
Every year, the UGent faculties launch a call for educational innovation projects. Approved projects can count on a small grant from the UGent to help educational innovation. More information on educational innovation projects can be found here.
Related educational innovation projects:
Every year, students of the joint international master IMBRSea follow a 6 ECTS online course on 'Research Design and Data in Marine Biological Sciences'. The online course takes place in the 3rd semester and aims to prepare students for their master dissertation which is carried out in the 4th semester. This preparatory course is offered on the Ocean Training Platform.
Students of the joint international master IMBRSea who come and study at UGent during the 2nd semester will take up the 'Methods in Experimental Marine Ecology' course. A part of this course is dedicated to develop Arduino skills. Interactive on campus sessions with Arduino kits are combined with the online module that can be found on the Ocean Training Platform.
Arduino kits and components were purchased to be used in a number of training sessions and workshops in courses with an experimental component where measuring water characteristics is key, such as in the 'Methods in Experimental Marine Ecology' course.
The educational innovation project of the UGent contributed to the development of the full online 1st semester for the joint international master IMBRSea on the Ocean Training platform. This online module of courses serves as a valid alternative to the regular on campus courses during that semester.
